그리운 옛 시절을 찾아서
평범한 샐러리맨,손창익은 중국,인도,몽고의 오지마을을 여행하며 평범한 일상을 촬영한다. 그의 사진에는 극적인 사건도,결정적 순간도 없다. 단조로운 일상과 평이한 삶의 순간만이 존재한다.구형 롤라이플렉스에 흑백필름을 장전하고 찬란하고 웅장한 풍경 대신 그는 소소한 일상,허전한 풍경을 행해 어렵게 노출과 초점을 맞춘다. 낡은 기계식 카메라로 이제는 오래된 시간의 풍경,낡은 일상의 정경을 정지시킨다.
그렇다면 작가는 왜 작품사진 혹은 여행사진의 주종을 이루는 희귀한 장면,웅대한 풍경을 포기하고,그의 말을 빌면'주목받지 못한 순간들'에만 열중하는 것일까? 그리고 왜 손창익은 인도,몽고,중국의 오랜마을들을 되풀이해 찾고 있는 것일까?그것은 아마도 그의 사진여행이 잃어버린,사라진 옛 시절을 되찾으려는 바램에 깊이 연관되어 있기 때문일 것이다.작가는 이제는 우리 땅에서 사라진 어린 시절을 중국,인도,몽고의 오지에서 다시 살고 싶은 것이엇다.해서 작가는 힘들고 불편한 사진여행을 마다하지 않는다.옛 시간,오랜 전통을 살고 있는 저 깊숙한 마을들은 작가에게 현대화,산업화와 더불어 우리에게서 사라진 어린 시절의 정경과 풍경을 되돌려주었던 것이다.
작가의 흑백 사진첩을 넘기면 아련한 향수,미세하게 감도는 따스함이 지난 시절의 추억,사라진 과거의 기억을 슬며시 일깨운다.오래된 카메라의 흑백필름으로 되찾은 작가의 '주목받지 못한 순간들'은 지난 시절을 그리워하는 우리의 감성을 살며시 흔든다.그의 단조롭고 평이한 흑백사진들을 디지털 시대와 더불어 사라져 가는 노스탤지어의 향미를 흩날리는 마법을 품고 있는 것이다.

In Search of the Good Old Days
Son Chang-Ik, an ordinary white-collar worker, travels villages in remote areas of China, India and Mongolia to take photographs of everyday life in those villages. In his photographs, only the tedious everyday events and moments from ordinary life exist. With black and white films in his old-fashioned Rolleiflex, he adjusts its exposure and focus to capture the daily life and empty landscape instead of the glorious and magnificent views. He freezes the looks of bygone days and views from the outdated everyday life with an antiquated mechanical camera.
Why has he given up the exotic sceneries or grand landscapes, which are the mainstay of artistic or travel photographs, and instead focuses on ‘the unnoticed moments’ as he calls them? Why does Son Chang-Ik visit old villages of India, China and Mongolia repeatedly? It might be because his photography trips are deeply related to his wish to bring back the old days that have disappeared and cannot be found again. He wanted to relive his childhood in remote areas of China, India and Mongolia as he could no longer find it in Korea.
Faint nostalgia and lingering warmth from his black and white photographs gently bring back old lost memories. Recaptured by black and white films with an old camera, his ‘unnoticed moments’ softly move our hearts aching with the longing for the old days. His simple and ordinary black and white photographs emanate the beauty and nostalgia of the old days that are disappearing from the digital age.
